CORONAVIRUS : Ways To Manage Your Anxiety
The new human coronavirus (which causes the coronavirus disease, COVID-1 certainly qualifies as a national security crisis. It is also a cause of widespread anxiety. Fear about the coronavirus has gripped the world. While nearly all cases have been in China that has not stopped people in other countries from worrying as it is spreading worldwide. This new illness certainly is frightening and needs attention.
Recently, Coronavirus hit Nigeria given its fragile health system and high population density we know the psychological implications this can cause for people who already struggle with anxiety disorders, the daily reminders and updates about coronavirus especially in Nigeria is only adding insult to injury. Here are some tips to help you manage anxiety;
1. Be mindful of the news you consume; You should seek out clarifying information from the most reputable and unbiased sources available, including the World Health Organization, CNN, BCC amongst others, consuming news from your Facebook timelines can be unhealthy.
2. Don’t stress over it: Stressing out over the fact that you’re stressed over coronavirus will only make your anxiety worse. Be calm and take preventive measures.
3. Adopting a better personal hygiene regimen by doing the following;
Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. (If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
4. Remind yourself that you are doing the best that you can: You have to remain positive about the situation, be mindful of your daily activities and try as much as possible to live a normal life.
In spite of trying these tips to help quell your coronavirus anxiety, you still feel overwhelmed with anxiety or that your coronavirus fears are interfering with your ability to go about your daily life, it is not a bad idea to talk to a mental health professional. Therapy can make a big difference in managing anxiety about all kinds of things, including the coronavirus.
